Wondering how a Medicare supplement plan could benefit you? Here are 3 promising benefits of this supplemental health insurance plan!

Medicare is a national health insurance program in the United States that provides coverage for individuals 65 years of age or older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities. While Medicare provides a significant amount of coverage, it does not cover all medical expenses. This is where a Medicare Supplement Plan, also known as a Medigap policy, comes in.

A Medicare Supplement Plan is a type of private insurance that is designed to supplement Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). These plans are offered by private insurance companies and are standardized by the federal government. There are ten different standardized plans available, each with a different set of benefits.

Here are the benefits of a Medicare Supplement Plan:

  • Comprehensive coverage: A Medicare Supplement Plan can help cover out-of-pocket costs such as deductibles, coinsurance, and copays that are not covered by Original Medicare. This can help reduce your financial burden when seeking medical treatment.

  • Worldwide coverage: If you have a Medicare Supplement Plan, you are covered for medical emergencies when traveling outside of the United States. Original Medicare does not provide this benefit.
  • Choice of providers: With a Medicare Supplement Plan, you have the freedom to see any provider that accepts Medicare. You are not limited to a specific network of providers like you are with a Medicare Advantage Plan.

  • No referral needed: With a Medicare Supplement Plan, you do not need a referral to see a specialist. Under Original Medicare, you may need a referral from your primary care doctor in order to see a specialist.

  • Guaranteed acceptance: If you are eligible for a Medicare Supplement Plan and apply during your open enrollment period, you are guaranteed acceptance. This is not the case with a Medicare Advantage Plan, which may require you to undergo medical underwriting before being accepted.

  • No annual limit: Original Medicare has an annual out-of-pocket limit on your medical expenses. Once you reach this limit, Medicare will cover most of your medical costs for the rest of the year. A Medicare Supplement Plan does not have an annual out-of-pocket limit, which can provide you with additional financial protection.

  • Portable: If you have a Medicare Supplement Plan, you can take it with you when you move out of state. This is not the case with a Medicare Advantage Plan, which is only available in certain areas.

  • Premium stability: Medicare Supplement Plans are not subject to annual changes in premiums like Medicare Advantage Plans. While your premium may increase due to factors such as inflation, it is generally more stable compared to a Medicare Advantage Plan.

  • No network restrictions: With a Medicare Supplement Plan, you are not restricted to a specific network of providers. You can see any provider that accepts Medicare, giving you more flexibility in your choice of medical care.

  • No pre-authorization required: With a Medicare Supplement Plan, you do not need pre-authorization for medical procedures. This can save you time and hassle when seeking medical treatment.

Summary

A Medicare Supplement Plan can provide comprehensive coverage for medical expenses that are not covered by Original Medicare, including deductibles, coinsurance, and copays. It also provides worldwide coverage, the freedom to see any provider that accepts Medicare, and no annual limit on out-of-pocket costs. Additionally, a Medicare Supplement Plan is portable, has stable premiums, and does not require pre-authorization for medical procedures.
